PD&A Expert Spotlight: Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist Stephen Herman, MD

Stephen P. Herman, MD, is board certified in pediatrics, adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and forensic psychiatry. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He has offices in New York and Arizona and holds active medical licenses in New York, Connecticut, California, and Arizona. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Child Health at the University of Arizona School of Medicine in Phoenix and has taught at every medical school in the New York City metropolitan area. 

Dr. Herman has over 40 years’ experience in child and adult forensic psychiatry. His cases have included:

  • Allegations of sexual abuse

  • Allegations of sexual and racial harassment

  • Psychological trauma and disability

  • Child custody disputes

  • Abuse, neglect, and termination of parental rights

  • Medical malpractice

  • Competence, insanity, and capital sentencing

  • Murders committed by adults and children

  • United States Army and Marine Corps courts-martial

  • Peer review of the work of other forensic psychiatrists

Dr. Herman has also served as a consultant to the Arizona Board of Medicine, assessing complaints brought against psychiatrists throughout the state.

Dr. Herman was educated at Brandeis University and the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. His interest in forensic psychiatry was kindled during medical school when he spent three months at the Kansas Diagnostic and Treatment Center, part of the renowned Menninger Institute in Topeka, Kansas. He observed and participated in interviews of mentally ill prisoners and was sometimes supervised by Karl Menninger, M.D.  During a Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Yale Child Study Center, he was mentored by Diane Schetky, a pioneer in the field of forensic child psychiatry, who taught him the value of ethical practice and the joy of passing this on to younger physicians.

Dr. Herman has published on a wide range of issues in both professional and lay publications, and he has presented at numerous meetings throughout the United States and abroad.  Prior to his training in forensic psychiatry, he served a residency in pediatrics at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and practiced pediatrics for several years, providing him an unusually strong background in general medicine and pediatrics.
